9 Dead After Massive Rainfall and Floods in South West China

Nine people have died and 11 are missing in floods in south west China. The floods follow 2 days of torrential rainfall in the region. Sanquan, in Nanchuan District, has received 305 mm of rain in the past three days.

Xishui County in Guizhou Province is the worst affected area. Nanchuan district and Chongqing Municipality are also badly affected.

All of the deaths occurred in Xishui County. Over 3,000 people have been evacuated and around 70 homes either destroyed or severely damaged. Nine people are still missing in the county. Two other people are missing in Nanchuan District, where over 350 people have been evacuated.

Forecasters say that heavy rains could affect Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei and Guizhou over the next few days. The earth quake hit region of Yunnan Province is also likely to be affected, increasingly the chances of landslides and flooding in the area.

In northern China, in Akto county, Xinjiang, heavy rainfall caused a landslide on 11 August that killed 5 people.
