Afghanistan Flash Floods Update – 123 Dead

As expected, the death toll from the flash floods in northern Afghanistan is rising. Some reports now claim there have been as many as 123 people killed since the flooding began on 24 April 2014. Many are still missing and thousands have been displaced.

The worst affected area is the province of Jawzjan, where 80 people are believed to have died in the floods and around 6,000 displaced after this homes were damaged or destroyed. The flooding has also affected other provinces since they first struck on 24 April. Around 30 people have been killed in Faryab province, with 1000s of houses destroyed. Sar-e-Pul and Balkh provinces have also been affected.

Drinking water is now in short supply and is a priority for the government and aid agencies providing assistance in the affected areas.
