Deadly Floods Across Indonesia

Several areas of Indonesia are currently suffering severe flooding. At least 5 people have died in the floods so far, and one person is missing.

North Sulawesi

Two days of heavy rainfall in North Sulawesi province, Indonesia, has brought severe flooding, killing at least 1 person and forcing around 2,000 people from their homes. The worst affected area is Manado, although the victim died in a landslide in Minahasa district. One person is still missing.

The heavy rainfall and flood water triggered landslides across the region. Four bridges have been destroyed by the flood water. Some areas of Manado city are said to be under 1.5 metres of water.

Emergency teams are attempting to evacuate those thought to be in danger, mostly families living near rivers. Condition have been made worse by the strong coastal winds. Further rain and severe weather is expected.

Sumatra and Java

Heavy rainfall has also led to 17,000 people evacuating in Jambi province, Sumatra. The worst affected area is Bungo, but also badly hit are Merangin and Sarolangun.

In west Java, the Cibeet River burst its banks in West Telukjambe district, inundating wide areas of rice fields. At least 1,380 people have been affected by the flooding there, with many of them having to move out of their homes to safer ground.

Jakarta
