Floods Damage 8,000 Homes in Aceh, Indonesia

Indonesia’s disaster management agency, BNPD, have reported flooding in the regencies of Aceh Jaya and Aceh Barat, in the Aceh province or special region of Indonesia.

Heavy rain since the afternoon of Tuesday 14 July 2015 has caused several rivers to overflow. BNPD say that river sedimentation and environmental degradation has made the area more vulnerable to flooding.

BNPD figures say that the flooding has affected 25,765 inhabitants, and damaged 7,904 houses. Roads and bridges have also been damage, although no casualties have been reported.

Flood water between 50 cm and 300 cm has been reported in Aceh Jaya and up to 150 cm in Aceh Jaya. At the peak of the flooding, over 2,000 people were displaced and staying in relief camps. Some have since been able to return to their homes.
