Floods in Sabah, Malaysia

As predicted by Malaysia’s Meteorological Department, a second wave of flooding has begun in Malaysia. However, rather than the predicted states of Terengganu, Pahang and Johor being hit, this time the flooding has struck in Malaysia’s far eastern state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo.

Rain has been falling there since Tuesday 17 December and the Padas River broke its banks early on Thursday 19 December 2013. Flood waters have reached above 1 metre in some villages, making many roads impassable.

Local media are reporting that around 22 villages have been flooded. The worst affected area is the sub-district of Kemabong, in particular Kg Gumisi, where around 44 families were evacuated. Evacuations were also necessary in Kuala Tomani and Kg Bangkulin, although it is understood this involved around only 10 families. There have been no reports of any injuries or fatalities in the flooding.

Temporary shelter in local authority buildings and mosques have been set up for the displace. Food and other aid is being distributed there.

Kemabong is a fairly remote area located about 40km from the town of Tenom, Sabah.
