India – 60,000 Affected in First Wave of Assam Flooding This Year

Several rivers in the Indian state of Assam have reached danger levels, affecting around 60,000 people from the 3 districts of Lakhimpur, Karimganj and Darrang.

Assam State Disaster Management Agency (ASDMA) reported on 05 June, 2017, that 113 people have been forced from their homes and are staying in a temporary camp in Lakhimpur.

ASDMA aslo reported that several rivers were above the danger mark, including: Brahmaputra at Nematighat (Jorhat district), Kopili at Kampur, (Nagaon), Barak at Badarpurghat (Karimganj), Katakhal at Matizuri (Haiakandi) and Kushiyara at Karimganj (Karimganj). (See river levels data below)

Others suggest many villages in Karimganj were still under water when the second wave of flooding began around 25 June.
