Heavy rains have battered parts of the southwest Indian state of Karnataka since 14 August, 2018, causing severe flooding and landslides.
The worst hit area is Kodagu district, close to the border with the state of Kerala. Recent flooding in Kerala has left more than 300 people dead over the last 2 weeks.
Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that at least 8 people have died and over 3,500 displaced in Karnataka. More than 800 homes have been destroyed and roads severely damaged, leaving communities isolated.
Teams from military, police, fire and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been carrying out relief work in the district.
Some flooding has also been reported in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Mysore districts. Schools, colleges and government offices have been closed.
A warning for heavy rainfall was issued on 15 August in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts.
Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) reported 253 mm of rain in 24 hours between 16 and 17 August in Kodagu District. The following day 153 mm of rain fell in 24 hours in Uttara Kannada.
The heavy rain has continued and a further 67 mm fell in 24 hours to 20 August in Kodagu District.
As with neighbouring Kerala, dam levels are extremely high in Karnataka.
KSNDMC said that the Ghataprabha Dam is already at full reservoir level (FRL) of 2,175 feet and the Almatti Dam is very close, standing at 1704.22 feet as of 20 August, just under FRL of 1704.81 feet.
India’s Central Water Commission Official Flood Forecast unit said on 18 August that the River Cauvery at Chunchunkatte in Mysore District was in “Extreme Flood Situation” with levels at 758.44 metres, higher than the previous flood record of 757.35 metres.
