Indonesia – Hundreds Dead After Sunda Strait Tsunami

Hundreds of people have lost their lives after a major tsunami hit coastal areas of Sunda Strait in Indonesia on 22 December, 2018.

The Sunda Strait is the strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra which connects the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean. Casualties and damage have so far been reported in areas of Carita Beach, Pandeglang and Serang in Banten province and South Lampung and Tanggamus in Lampung province. The death toll is expected to rise as further damage assessments are carried out.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said thetsunami was likely caused by an undersea landslide resulting from volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau and was exacerbated by an abnormally high tide due to the current full moon

As of 23 December, there were 222 fatalities, 843 injuries, 28 people missing. Hundreds of boats and over 500 houses and hotels have been damaged.

A series of earthquakes on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia in September this year, triggered a tsunami that flooded northern parts of the island, causing widespread damage and destruction.
