I reported on 30th July that Yamaguchi and Shimane Prefectures of Japan had seen severe flooding and landslides after what had been described as unprecedented heavy rainfall. 1 person died in the floods after a house collapsed.
The heavy rainfall continued in other areas of Japan and record breaking amounts of rain were recorded in Niigata and Tottori Prefectures. Over 10cm fell in a 24 hour period on 1st August. According to the Meteorological Agency in Japan, this area of Japan saw the most intense rainfall ever recorded in an hour, as they warned there could be more to come. At Tottori airport, a record amount of 6.7 cm fell between 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. In the Nagaoka area of Niigata’s 5.4 cm fell, also in the space of just 1 hour. Elsewhere in Japan 10 cm of rain fell in one hour near Oda, Shimane Prefecture.
One person died in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture after a house collapsed and a further 50 had to be evacuated in case of further collapses.
The levels of the Shiomi River in Tottori Prefecture levels rose by over 2 metres forcing the river to break its banks flooding roads and houses. 300 peope had to be evacuated from their homes in Tottori city.
Further heavy rainfall was forecast by Japan’s Meteorological Agency.
