Malaysia – Thousands Displaced by Floods in Kelantan and Terengganu

The states of Kelantan and Terengganu in Western Malaysia have been affected by flooding over the last few days. Around 13,000 people have been evacuated to special relief camps. Local media report that 2 people have died in the floods.

One area of Pasir Mas District in Kelantan recorded rainfall above 400 mm each day for 4 consecutive days from 25 November.

The Golok River at Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas has reached 10.54 metres, exceeding danger levels by 1.54 metres.

Evacuations

Disaster officials say that over 13,000 people have been evacuated, most of them in Kelantan (11,880). As of 29 November, around 1,200 people had evacuated in Terengganu. Recently floods have also affected parts of Perlis state, where around 20 people have been evacuated in Padang Besar.

Local media report that 2 people have died in the floods. Both reportedly drowned in flood water in separate incidents in Bukit Payong

In Kelantan evacuees are being housed at 96 relief centres in nine districts, namely Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Bachok, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Machang and Jeli. As of 29 November, Pasir Mas had the highest number of evacuees, housing 7,344 people. Around 1,500 people are currently displaced and housed in relief centres in Kota Bharu.

In Terengganu, 31 relief centres have been set up, and many of those displaced (around 900) were in the Besut area. Other evacuations centres in Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, Setiu and Kuala Nerus , each with between 20 to 100 residents.
