Pakistan – Deadly Storms Hits Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province

The Provincial Disaster Authority in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (PDMA-KP), Pakistan, reported on 09 April, 2019, that strong winds and heavy rain have affected the districts of Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Kohat and Dera Ismail Khan.

At least 6 fatalities have been reported. Three people died as a result of a buildings collapsing in Peshawar due to strong winds and heavy rain. Two died in Swabi district in similar circumstances, and one person died on Kohat when a wall collapsed.

PDMA said that 26 people have been injured and 5 houses destroyed, including 3 in Peshawar.

Pakistan Meteorological Department said that thunderstorms and rain with gusty winds are expected at scattered places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Kohat, Mardan, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan divisions) over the next 24 hours.

Parts of Pakistan and neighbouring Afghanistan have suffered severe weather since early March this year. Days of heavy rain in Pakistan’s Balochistan Province caused a landslide on 24 March, 2019, killing at least 6 people.
