Philippines – Typhoon Mangkhut Causes Deadly Floods and Landslides

Typhoon Mangkhut (locally named Ompong) swept through the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between 12 and 15 September, bringing winds well over 200 km/h (124 mph), waves of up to 6 metres and torrential rain. The storm caused widespread wind damage, flooding and landslides. Over 70 people have died and 50 are still missing.

After leaving PAR, Mangkhut headed towards southern China and made landfall near Yangjiang City in Guangdong Province on 16 September. At least 4 people have died in the storm in China.

As of 17 September, Typhoon Mangkhut had dissipated into a tropical depression and will continue to weaken. However parts of south west China and northern provinces of Vietnam could see intense rainfall and strong winds.

Previously the storm had caused flooding and wind damage in parts of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Philippines

According to media, as of 18 September the death toll reached 74, with at least 60 fatalities reported in Cordillera Administrative Region, including around 40 due to a massive landslides in Ucab village, Itogon Municipality, Benguet Province. Over 50 people remain missing in the landslides. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the area.

Other fatalities were reported in Cagayan Valley (10), Central Luzon (2), and in Ilocos Region (1) and Metro Manila (1).

The Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that 893,844 people have been affected by the storm in the Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, National Capital Region (NCR) and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).

As of 18 September there were 245,775 people evacuated, with many of them saying in evacuation centres.

Flooding was reported in 229 areas in Ilocos, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and Mimaropa. A total of 1,264 houses were reported damaged, 130 totally and 1,134 partially, in the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and CAR. Over 200 sections of road and 5 bridges were affected in the Ilocos region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol, and CAR.

China

In China, according to media, as of 18 September, four people were reported dead in Guangdong Province.

Over 2.5 million people in Guangdong province were evacuated according to Xinhua news agency. A further 220,000 were evacuated in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The storm also caused flooding and wind damage in Hong Kong and neighboring Macau. Over 300 people were injured but no fatalities have been reported.
