Heavy rain and flash floods in Mindanao, southern Philippines, have left at least 7 people dead and 2 missing.
The cities of Malaybalay and Valencia are among the worst affected. Philippines National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) say that at least 880 people have been evacuated and 41 homes have been damaged.
The victims are thought to have been residents of riverbank shanties in the area, and were swept away by flood waters when swollen rivers burst their banks.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) say that the Southwest Monsoon is currently affecting Visayas, Mindanao and Southern Luzon, where further heavy rainfall can be expected.
PAGASA warned: “People living near the mountain slopes and in the low-lying areas of the above mentioned river systems and the local disaster risk reduction and management councils concerned are advised to be alert for possible of landslides and flash floods.”
