Sri Lanka – Thousands Displaced by Further Flooding

More flooding has affected wide areas of Sri Lanka over the last few days. At least 6 people died in flooding in the country earlier this month.

According to the National Disaster Management Centre (DMC), over 65,000 people from 13 Districts have been affected by heavy rain and flood-related events since 18 December.

As per DMC’s update of 23 December, 19,072 families (65,316 people) have been affected.  At least 1 person died in flood waters in Palindanuwara.

Over 60 houses have been destroyed and 1,463 houses have been partially damaged.

As of 23 December, DMC reported that 15,470 people were displaced and staying in 109 relief centres.  Over 3,000 of those displaced are in Batticaloa and 3,377 in Anuradhapura districts.  Among the other worst affected districts are Badulla (1,308 displaced), Puttalam (1,674), Kurunegala (1,165), Hambantota (1,911) and Polonnaruwa.

The Armed Forces and the Police have been deployed for search and rescue operations. Landslide notices have been issued for certain areas in the districts of Matale, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Ratnapura and Haputale Districts.
