Vietnam – Damaging Storms Hit Northern Provinces

At least 3 people have lost their lives after severe storms in Vietnam from 22 April, 2020.

The storms brought strong winds, lightning and heavy rainfall, mostly affecting the northern provinces, in particular Ha Giang, Son La, Yen Bai and Lao Cai.

Flooding was reported in the central province of Quang Binh, damaging wide areas of crops. Authorities warned that further heavy rain will increase the risk of flash floods, landslides and local flooding in Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Son La and Lao Cai provinces.

According to Vietnam’s Disaster Management Authority, fatalities occurred in Ha Giang, Son La and Yen Bai as a result of wind damage, collapsing buildings or lightning strike. Thirteen other people were injured.

Almost 6,000 homes suffered severe damage, with the provinces of Lao Cai (599 houses), Ha Giang (1,283 houses), Yen Bai (795 houses) and Son La (710 houses) the worst affected.
