Yemen – Widespread Flooding Causes Death and Destruction

At least 17 people have lost their lives in recent floods in Yemen.

Yemen Meteorological Service reported heavy rain in the country from 22 to 25 July, with several areas seeing more than 50mm in 24 hours.

The worst hit area is Al Hudaydah Governorate in western Yemen, where 13 people died and around 50 homes were destroyed, according to local media reports. A further fatality was reported in Ibb Governorate, where homes and crops were also destroyed.

Yemen News Agency SABA reported that 3 people died after heavy rains in Bani Qais district in Hajjah Governorate washed away dozens of huts and tents in camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Elsewhere, flooding caused material damages in Lahj, Shabwah and Abyan governorates. Heavy rain also affected the capital Sana’a, with flooding reported.
