3 Dead in Albania Floods

Three people have died in floods in Albania since yesterday 18 November 2014.

Torrential rainfall over the last 48 hours led to flash floods across parts of the country, including the capital Tirana.

Over 70 mm of rain has fallen in the Tirana area over the last 24 hours. In the north east of the country, 65 mm of rain fell in Kukës between 18 and 19 November. However, the worst of the flooding seems to have affected the neighbouring regions (counties) of Lezhë and Shkodër, and also the area around Tirana. Some flooding has also affected parts of Fier county, south of Tirana.

Two of the victims were a man and his daughter who were killed when their car was dragged away by flood water in the mountainous region around the smal town of Laç in the Kurbin District of Lezhë county. The third victim died when a bridge collapsed in the same region.

Emergency teams, including police and military, are working to help residents in the affected areas of the counties of Tirana, Lezhë, Shkodër and Fier.

Albania Floods 2010

Albania saw some of its worst flooding during several periods of heavy rainfall between December 2009 and January 2010. The counties of Shkodra and Lezhë were once again among the worst affected. The county of Durrës was also badly hit. Almost 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres) of land was flooded, and over 5,000 people evacuated from their homes. The number would have been higher but many refused to leave. Around 2,200 houses were damaged by the flooding.
