Flash Floods in Navarra, Spain after River Overflows

The Baztan river in Navarra, northern Spain has burst its banks and flooded parts of the town of Elizondo.

An area of low pressure passing over parts of central and northern Spain dumped huge amounts of rain in the Navarra area earlier today. The worst of the rain fell between 05:50 (am) and 06:50 (am) where 37 liters per square meter of rain were recorded. 107 liters per square meter of rain has fallen so far today 04 July 2014).

Levels of the Baztan River in Elizondo soon rose to around 4 metres.

The flood waters came so suddenly that people were trapped in their cars and homes. At least 7 people had to be rescued the emergency services. Some local TV reports showed cars being carried along by the flow of flood water as streets were turned to rivers.

A small number of Elizondo residents have been evacuated, as well as some of the town’s public buildings, including the library and medical centre.
