Floods in Bulgaria – Dam Overflows, Bridges Damaged

The heavy rainfall sweeping across the Balkans has already caused severe flooding in Romania and Serbia. Recent reports show that some areas of neighbouring Bulgaria have also suffered.

The recent floods in Romania left 4 people dead, over 200 displaced and around 10,000 hectares of farmland damaged. In Serbia, over 400 people had to evacuate their homes after heavy rain and melting snow caused rivers to overflow.

The rain has continued to pour in Bulgaria. The Pleshivska River in Vidin province overflowed and flooded the nearby village of Pleshivets late yesterday 23 April 2014. Two bridges and at least one house were damaged by the flood water. Although the flood water has receded somewhat, the rain is still falling, increasing the risk of further flooding. The local mayor in Ruzhintsi Municipality recently announced that as many as 10 bridges have been damaged by flood water since the heavy rain began last week. Tge list includes bridges in the villages of Ruzhintsi, Byalo Pove, Drenovets, Roglets and Drazhintsi, as well as Pleshivets.

Also in Vidin province, there are some reports claiming that the village of Gyurgich was flooded after a dam overflowed on Wednesday 23 April 2014. It is not clear whether this incident is related to the flooding that occurred in the village of Pleshivets mentioned above. Some reports say that bridges, homes, power supplies and sewers have all been damaged, but there are no reports of any casualties.

Last week 7 villages in the neighbouring Montana Province in north west Bulgaria were cut off by floods and residents left without electricity after flood water had damage power supplies.
