France – Dozens Rescued After Flash Floods in Corsica

The equivalent of 2 months’ worth of rain fell in just a few hours on 11 June, causing severe flash flooding in Corsica, France.

Flood waters swept through the city of Ajaccio, the capital city of Corsica, a well known tourist island in the Mediterranean Sea. Vehicles and debris were dragged through the streets.

The government of Corsica said the the districts of Salines, Cannes and Pietralba were badly affected. Firefighters were called on to rescue 80 people trapped in vehicles. Around 70 people were evacuated from their homes. One firefighter was injured during the event, and was taken to hospital.

Météo France said the city’s weather station recorded 44mm of rain in 4 hours, which is twice the amount normally seen in June. Localized rainfall totals were much higher in other areas of the city. The government of Corsica reported over 100mm of rain fell in just 2 hours.
