Spain – Flash Floods in Malaga Province After 50mm of Rain in 30 Minutes

Raging flood waters swept through the town of Ronda in Malaga Province, southern Spain yesterday, 13 September, 2018.

In a similar fashion to the flooding that struck in Toldeo Province, central Spain earlier this week, streets in Ronda turned to rivers after a short period of torrential rain. Local observers said that over 50 mm of rain fell in Ronda in just 30 minutes. Andalusia’s Hidrosur network recorded 45.3mm in 1 hour at their Ronda observation station.

Emergency services were called out to more than 30 incidents of flooding. Roads have been blocked and some homes damaged. As of early 14 September no injuries or fatalities had been reported.

Flooding also affected nearby areas of Setenil de las Bodegas, where the Trejo river overflowed, and Archidona, where a small creek, Arroyo de la Moheda, also broke its banks.
