Niger suffered flooding during August and early September this year, and it is believed that the country could now be facing poor harvest and severe food shortages as a result.
Last week we reported on a similar situation in North Korea, where flood events this year have also lead to food insecurity.
Niger’s Prime Minister, Brigi Rafini, yesterday announced that as many as 1 million people in Niger could suffer as a result of food shortages, brought about by both droughts and floods.
During a parliamentary debate he said “This season was not what we expected. We can write off this year”
Initial estimates say that “about one million are at risk and must be assisted” according the the Prime Minister. More precise figures are understood to be published shortly.
The severe flooding in the country mostly struck during August this year. Crops were destroyed, as many as 230,000 people were displaced and 32 people killed.
