According to The Libyan Herald, parts of south west Libya were hit by severe flooding earlier this week. The areas affected are Qatrun and the small town Umm Al Aranib, which lies near Murzuq, south of Sebha.
The torrential rain first struck on Monday 9 December and continued for several days. Some houses were destroyed in the floods. Roads were blocked and there were cuts in power and communication services.
Earlier this week, Libya’s National Centre for Meteorology had forecast the heavy rainfall for Sebha, Obari, Ghat, Murzuq and Al-Qatrun and warned of possible floods. Heavy rainfall can often result in flash floods in this usually arid region. Such heavy rainfall us unusual for this time of year.
