4,000 Stranded After Floods in Chile

4,000 people have been left stranded by floods in southern and central Chile, with a further 27,000 left without electricity after storms and torrential rain over the last few days.

The heavy rain fell over 02 and 03 June, 2014. As much as 50mm of rain fell during that 24 hour period in Concepción, Bío Bío region. The affected regions are Bío Bío, Valparaíso and Aysén. The regions of La Araucanía, Los Lagos and Los Rios are also affected.

Most of those left stranded are as a result of overflowing rivers following the heavy rainfall. ONEMI (Oficina Nacional de Emergencia del Ministerio del Interior / National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry) also report that 1,070 homes have been damaged, and a further 270 homes severely damaged by the floods. There are no reports of any deaths or injuries.
