Dominican Republic – Thousands Evacuated After Floods in La Vega Province

Over 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes after torrential rain and floods on 06 April, 2018, in La Vega Province, Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic Emergency Operations Center (COE) declared a red alert for La Vega Province and a yellow alert for Monseñor Nouel, Espaillat, and Santiago provinces due to severe rain and floods.

Over 99 mm of rain fell in 24 hours in Jarabacoa, La Vega Province between 05 and 06 April.

The heavy rain caused the Camú and Yaque del Norte rivers to overflow, flooding several areas of La Vega Province including Jarabacoa, San Martín, San Miguel, Villa Francisca, Villa María, Primavera, Nápoles and Riviera.

As of 07 April, COE said that 4,165 people were evacuated, 833 houses damaged and one house completely destroyed.

Comedores Económicos del Estado (CEED), the social service agency in the Dominican Republic, said it is working in the sectors that were affected by the floods.

The director general of the CEED, Nicolás Calderón, said that affected areas are expected to return to normal over the next few days.
