Tropical Cyclone Fernand brought heavy rain across parts of Mexico on 26th August, triggering flash floods and mudslides. Fernand made landfall in Mexico’s eastern state of Veracruz, then moved north west towards the state of Puebla. Forecasters warned of mudslides, flash floods and up to 30cm of rain during the 26th and 27th August. The storm has since weakened and is expected to dissipate in the coming days.
13 people have been killed as a result of the storm and floods. Nine of the victims were in he municipality of Yecuatla, northern Veracruz State. Another fatality occurred when a man drowned after being swept away by flood water in the state of Oaxaca.
The storms and floods caused damage to over 100 homes and over 300 people needed to be evacuated and moved to shelters in Veracruz. Roads and highways have been damaged or blocked, and many schools in the region were closed. Veracruz State Governor, Javier Duarte, has called in the Mexican federal government to declare an emergency in 92 of the state’s municipalities.
