Mexico – Flash Flooding in San Luis Potosí After Torrential Rain

Heavy rain in central Mexico on 30 May, 2019 caused flash flooding in the state of San Luis Potosí. Streets were turned to rivers in the city of Matehuala, sweeping away vehicles and causing severe material damage.

Initial estimates suggest around 160mm of rain fell in just 3 hours in Matehuala on 30 May, 2019. The downpour caused sudden floods which raged through several streets of the city, dragging vehicles and entering commercial premises, restaurants and banks located in the city centre.

The government of San Luis Potosí reported that around 300 vehicles, several roads and about 50 commercial properties were damaged. No fatalities and only minor injuries were reported however.

Governor of the State, Juan Manuel Carreras López, visited the affected areas on 31 May.
