The two parishes of Portland and St Mary in Jamaica suffered from flash flooding on 19 and 20 after 2 days of torrential rain. The floods caused extensive damage to both parishes, and according to the Jamaica Observer, the estimated cost of repairs is likely to exceed $125 million JMD, which is just over $1 million USD.
The Jamaican governments Information Minister, Sandrea said the 2 days of rain and flooding “did significant damage to about 30 corridors in the parishes of Portland and St Mary”.
Although the clear up has begun, further heavy rain has since been forecast and the Jamaica Meteorological Service reinstated their Flash Flood Warning yesterday, 23 January 2014, lasting at least until 5pm today, Friday 24 January. Low lying areas are at particular risk of flash flooding. The Met Service said that a cold Front was lying just to the north of Jamaica which could bring moderate to heavy showers across Portland and St Mary and extend into the neighbouring parish of St Thomas.
