1 Man Dead, 1 Child Missing in Tennessee Floods

One man died and a child is missing in severe flooding in Tennessee, USA, yesterday Thursday 05 June 2014.

As much as 8 inches (20cm) of rain fell in parts of southern Middle Tennessee yesterday. Further heavy rainfall is expected today, Friday 06 June 2014.

The missing child – a 6-year old boy – was swept away by flood water in Hickman County, Tennessee. He was in a car with other family members, all of whom escaped the vehicle when it hit upon difficulties after crossing a bridge over a swollen river. The car was swept away by the raging flood water. 5 people – two adults and 3 children – were rescued from the water. Rescue teams carried out searches for the missing boy throughout the evening, and will resume again early today.

The man is believed to have drowned in his car after it was swept away by flood water near Summertown, Lawrence County.

Flooding caused damage to some property and also to power supplies. Several roads in the area had to be closed. The Little Bigby River in Colombia, Tennessee, overflowed, causing transport problems for many residents.

A wave of extreme weather conditions in Illinois, Arkansas and Tennessee left a further 2 people dead after they died in strong winds in Arkansas. Also in Arkansas a train was derailed in the strong winds.
