Areas of Austin saw as much as 30cm of rain in just 12 hours on Sunday 13th October, 2013. Barton Springs, north of the city, received 12.1 inches of rain (over 30cm) and down town Austin itself saw 10.6 inches (nearly 27cm). Further heavy rain is forecast for the area, at least until Tuesday 15th October. As of Sunday, flood warnings were in place for Austin, and also Brazoria, Matagorda, Wharton and Jackson counties in the area. Heavy rainfall was seen elsewhere in Texas, and Midland, Ector, Hall, Briscoe, Motley and Floyd counties were also on flood alert.
As a result of the heavy rainfall, roads in parts of Austin Texas were flooded and emergency services were called on to remove mud and debris, and also rescue some from flood waters. A pregnant woman trapped in her car by rising flood waters was rescued by fire fighters, and several people living in a mobile home park in Onion Creek, south of the city, had to be helped to safety.
There is concern that further heavy rainfall will result in more severe flooding. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Pat McDonald, the ground is now saturated and fears now are that “the water will have little place to run off.”
The last days of the world famous Austin City Limits Music Festival had to be cancelled as a result of the floods. Some refunds for tickets will be in place.
