100s Rescued After Floods in Sri Lanka

Heavy rainfall has been so bad in Aralaganwila, Sri Lanka, that around 100 people had to be rescued from their homes and taken to safer ground away from flood waters.

According to Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation:

Aralaganwila has received the highest rainfall of 207.4 milimeters in the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 this morning.

Polonnaruwa has also received a rainfall of more than 141 milimeters. Nochchiyagama and Mihintale have received the rainfalls of 115.4 and 99 milimeters respectively.

Thousands of hectares of paddy field has also been flooded in areas around Batticaloa District in Eastern Province, where Chenkaladi, Oddamavadi, Kiran and Valachchenai have been the worst affected areas. Residents have been warned of potential flooding. Polonnaruwa District in North Central Province has also been badly affected.

Storms have also been causing problems and 10 people have been injured by lightning strikes in Sri Lanka over the last few days.
