Floods in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

Heavy rainfall on 9th September resulted in flooding in villages in the Zebak district of Badakhshan province, in north east Afghanistan. Askitol was reported as the worst affected of the villages.

Nearly 40 houses were destroyed in the floods, many of them as a result of landslides triggered by the flood waters. Reports say that at least 4 people were killed in the flooding, with a further 20 people missing, as of 12th September. Rescue operations were ongoing in order to find the missing and recover the bodies of the victims.

About 140 cattle, 100 acres of farmland and numerous roads in the region have also been destroyed in the floods.
