Flash Floods in Northern Vietnam

Vietnam’s National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention announced on 7th September that flash floods had struck in numerous northern provinces.

Further flooding and landslides have been predicted for Quang Ninh, Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Can, Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho.

As many as 25 people have been reported as killed in the floods and landslides. A total of 38 houses have been destroyed and nearly 7,000 hectares of rice and farmland devastated. Vinh Phuc province suffered the worst crop destruction.

The areas currently suffereing from flooding include: Lao Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Thai Nguyen, Son La, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Bac Giang and Tuyen Quang

Rice and food production has suffered as a result if the floods. VietnamNet reports that Vietnam’s rice cultivation may suffer a decrease of up to 10% as a result of climate change. Total farm and food production may decrease by as much as 5%.
