Chi River Overflows in Chaiyaphum Province, Thailand

Thailand’s National News Bureau are reporting that heavy rainfall in north eastern Thailand has caused the Chi River to overflow, inundating over 300 nearby houses. The flooding has forced those living along the river to evacuate to higher ground. Farmland was also damaged in Khok Sa-at and Nong Bua Rawae subdistricts.

River levels rose by as much as 3 metres over the last few days. Heavy rain and runoff from the Phang Hoei Mountain Range forced levels higher. Heavy rain also caused damage to several check dams in the Lam Chiang Tha Reservoir, increasing levels of the Chi River further.

17 Provinces Still Recovering from Floods

Elsewhere in Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) say that the flood situation is improving in most of the 17 provinces affected by floods over the last 7 days or more. The DDPM say that floods remain in 7 provinces of Pijit, Nakhonsawan, Nakhon Ratchasima, Pitsanulok, Payao, Tak and Maha Sarakham. Chaiyaphum province can be added to that list after recent events there.

Water levels of the Yom River and Nan River in Pijit are said to be still rising, although a respite in rain cold soon seen the situation return to normal. Serious flooding was reported in 2 districts of Pitsanulok after heavy rainfall over the last 2 days. Flooding caused damage to houses and farmland in the districts of Neun Maprang and Wat Bot between 01 and 02 September 2014.
