Death Toll Rises in Odisha Floods

Officials announced yesterday that the number of people killed in the floods in Odisha now stands at 35.

There still remain over 100,000 people displaced, but officials are expecting the situation to improve slowly over the next few days in most parts of the state. However, some coastal districts may still be at risk.

Figures for Odisha Floods August 2014

As of 08 August 2014, official figures for the flood disaster were:

  • 35 killed in 1 week of flooding
  • 139,023 evacuated
  • 398 villages cut off
  • 15,943 houses destroyed
  • Around 1.8 million affected
  • Over 200 free kitchens proving food for the displaced

11 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 30 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams working on relief and rescue operations.

River Levels

In Keonjhar district, levels of the Baitarani river are now below flood stage, but are still very high in Bhadrak district, posing a further flood threat. Although levels of the Mahanadi and Devi are falling slowly, they remain above the danger mark in some places. The Mahanadi river in Cuttack district stood at around 30 cm above flood stage. This is expected to increase levels of the Mahanadi river in Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur over the next 24 hours.
