China – Thousands Affected by Floods After Inner Mongolia Dams Fail

China’s Ministry of Water Resources reports that two reservoir dams failed in locations near Hulunbuir City in the autonomous region of Inner Mongolia, on 17 July 2021.

The dams failed after a period of heavy rainfall. The Ministry said over 200mm of rain fell in some areas, causing dams to fail in 2 separate locations. Nearby areas were flooded and authorities initiated an emergency response, carrying out households checks and search and rescue operations. According to media reports, bridges and roads were destroyed and wide areas of farmland inundated. Over 16,000 people in the area are thought to have ben affected by the floods.

Chinese media also reported heavy rain caused flash flooding in other parts of the region, prompting evacuations and rescues in areas around Hinggan League.
