Indonesia – Floods Return to Jakarta, 1 Dead in Semarang

More heavy rainfall in Indonesia over the last 2 days, between 2 February and 5 February 2014, has left one person dead and thousands more displaced. Further heavy rain is expected for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Jakarta
Heavy rain that lasted from Monday through to Wednesday 5 February has left many of the usual flood prone areas of Jakarta under as much as 70cm of water and some areas as high as 150cm. Remarkably, this is not usual in Jakarta in recent times. Areas of West Jakarta have been worst hit so far this time around.

The emergency services were using boats to evacuate residents of the flood hit areas, who will be housed in relief centres across the city. The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) said that the number of evacuees had doubled since Monday, rising from around 9,000 to 18,500. For many of them, this won’t be for the first time they have evacuated this year, and sadly, may not be the last.

Meanwhile, according to the Jakarta Post, the Jakarta Sanitation Agency has released figures showing that the flooding between 18 January and 1 February 2014 deposited over 90,000 tons of garbage in the cities rivers and drainage canals. The garbage, which included large items such as furniture, collected in Jakarta’s sluice gates, or piled up under bridges.

Semarang
Flash flooding struck in Semarang, Central Java on Tuesday 4 February after 2 days of heavy rain. The floods and rainfall caused a landslide in Tinjomoyo, Banyumanik district which left one person dead.

The floods forced thousands living near the Banjir Kanal Timur in Sawah Besar, Gayamsari district, to evacuate their homes.
