Unusually heavy rainfall of up to 50mm fell overnight Tuesday 10 to Wednesday 11 December in various regions of Israel. Galilee, Sharon and the center are understood to be the worst affected. According to Israel Meteorological Service (IMS) Tel Aviv also saw heavy rain (40mm) although only light showers were seen in Jerusalem.
Daily Rainfall figures (from IMS):
- Tel Mond 50mm
- Harashim 43mm
- Ein HaHoresh 37mm
- Bet Dagan 31mm
The towns of Umm el-Fahm in Haifa District, and Tira and Qalansuwa in the Central District, were all struggling with flash floods earlier today. The drainage systems have been unable to cope with the large volume of rain water. Schools have been closed as a precaution.
Roads have been flooded and warnings were issued for drivers. The rain and storms have been so bad that the airports in Haifa and Rosh Pina have also been closed.
Israel Meteorological Service warns of frequent showers accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds from the north, a risk of flooding in low-lying areas and unseasonably cold weather.
