Malaysia Floods – Kelantan Flood Victims to get Homes on Stilts

Families who lost their homes to the Kelantan floods of December 2014 are to receive new “flood-resistant” homes on stilts.

Kelantan saw some of the worst flooding on record during December 2014 and early January 2015. Other parts of Malaysia, including the states of Terengganu, Pahang and Perak were also badly affected. At least 21 people died in the floods, which forced 200,000 people to evacuate their homes. In early January 85,000 flood victims were still living in shelters or temporary accommodation.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak visited the flood hit area of Manek Urai yesterday to launch the house building project. As many as 3,000 of the new “stilt homes” could be built in Kelantan in a project which is expected to take a year to complete. However, some homes, including over 100 in Manek Urai, are expected to be ready in 75 days.

Bernama report that:

There are two designs for the houses depending on the ground conditions – a 61m² (660ft²) detached house on 2.4m-high concrete stilts (costing RM48,000 each) or a 74m² (800ft²) detached unit on the ground (RM40,000 each).
