Heavy Rain Threatens More Flooding in Indonesia and Malaysia – 77 mm Rain in Kuching

WMO say that 77.4 mm of rain fell in the last 24 hours in Kuching in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia. Over 180 mm of rain fell in Timika, Indonesia.

Parts of Saraka and neighbouring state Sabah have been experiencing flooding for the last 2 weeks. One person died as a result of the floods, and at one point around 7,000 people were forced from their homes. Almost all have since returned, but the recent heavy rainfall could mean further large-scale evacuations.

Bernama are already reporting that at least 20 people have been evacuated in the Baram district in the Miri division as a precaution. Levels of the Baram and Bakong Rivers threatened to overflow when authorities decided to evacuate the 4 families.

Indonesia

Parts of Indonesia have also seen heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours, increasing the threat of further flooding.

Papua, East and West Java and Sulawesi have all seen increased levels of rainfall. Surabaya in East Java had 113.1 mm of rain in 24 hours 28 to 29 January 2015. In South Sulawesi, 107.1 mm of rain fell in Makassar during the same period. In Timika, Papua, 183 mm fell between 29 and 30 January 2015.

No flooding has as yet been reported in the areas of Indonesia. One person died in floods last week in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Jakarta also saw some flooding last week.
