More Flood Deaths in Indonesia

There have been more deadly flood incidents in Indonesia over the weekend, as authorities have released new figures and statistics regarding the flood disaster in Jakarta.

Siau island, North Sulawesi

Flash floods on remote Siau island, North Sulawesi, killed at least 2 people and left 27 missing. The fatalities occurred after flash floods surged down a mountain side. The force of the flood water was so string that it capsized a boat in the sea below. Eight people managed to escape the boat.

Jakarta Death Toll Rises

Meanwhile in Jakarta, figures released from the Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) show that there have been 23 flood related deaths in the recent spate of flooding which began around 2 weeks ago. 11 of the 23 deaths occurred in East Jakarta. Drowning, disease and electrocution were the main causes.

Some sources claim the flood waters are now receding in the city. However, there still remain around 38,000 people living in 150 evacuation centres in the city.
