Nepal – Dozens Dead or Missing After Heavy Rain Triggers Floods and Landslides

Forty-seven people have died and almost 50 are missing after heavy monsoon rainfall triggered flooding and landslides in Nepal.

According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (NDRRMA), there were over 100 incidents of major flooding or landslides across the country between 09 and early 13 July.

A total of 109 homes have been destroyed and around 30 others severely damaged. According to Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), 412 families have been displaced in various districts.

As reported by FloodList last week, 2 people died and 16 were missing after landslides on 09 July in Barhabise municipality of Sindhupalchowk district. Flooding and landslides in several areas of Kaski District on 10 July left at least 5 people dead and 1 missing.

Several other areas of the country were hit by heavy rain which triggered flooding and landslides on 10 July.

A landslide in Barekot Rural Municipality, Jajarkot District left 10 dead and 1 missing. One person died in a landslide in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality in Gulmi District.

The worst hit area is Myagdi District. A landslide in Malika Rural Municipality on 10 July left 8 dead and 2 missing and destroyed 10 homes. Meanwhile in Dhawalagiri Rural Municipality another landslide killed 18 people with a further 2 still missing. A total of 20 homes were destroyed.

One person was swept away by flood water in Raghuganga Rural Municipality of Myagdi on 10 July.

The heavy rain continued to fall since then, with more deadly landslides reported. Eleven people are missing and one dead after several landslides in Silichong Rural Municipality, Shankhuwasabha District 12 July.

One fatality was reported in Myagde Rural Municipality, Tanahu District after a landslide early on 13 July.

The heavy rain has continued to fall in some areas, with Danda in Nawalpur district recording 101.8 mm in 24 hours to 13 July and Syangja in Syangja district 108 mm during the same period.

As of 13 July, Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology warned that the Narayani river is above alert levels in 2 locations in Chitwan district.
