Floods in northern Vietnam

More flooding has struck in South East Asia, this time in northern Vietnam. Heavy rainfall that began a few days ago has resulted in flash floods in Vietnam’s northern province of So’n La.

Flooding has already affected parts of Thailand and Mynamar in the region. Weather forecasts are expected to be worse still as tropical storm Jebi, currently somewhere over the South China Sea, is expected to head towards China and Vietnam. As of early today 1st August, Jebi was around 500 km south east of the coast of Hainan island in South East China with winds up to 70km/h. It is moving in a north westerly direction towards China ( Hainan island and western Guangdong) but subsequently may move onwards towards north eastern Vietnam by the weekend, bringing storms, strong winds and further heavy rainfall.

In Vietnam 5 people have been killed in the recent flooding. The deaths were in in the province of Son La, where two people die trying to cross a river. There were also deaths in the provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai and Dien Bien. Vietnam’s Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control reported that Dien Bien had seen rainfall of 15cm to 26 cm over the last few days.

Flooding has caused problems for the agricultural sector by destroying 3,762 hectares of crops. Floods have also killed cattle and damaged 226 houses as well as several vulnerable bridge structures.
