Red Cross Issues Six-Month Report on Typhoon Haiyan

Six months after Typhoon Haiyan slammed into the Philippines, the American Red Cross continues to deliver the right help at the right time.

In its six-month report, the American Red Cross describes the work that has been done and outlines the move to longer term recovery efforts. Thanks to generous donations, those affected by this devastating event continue to receive assistance and support. The report can be found here.

“Today, we are focused on rebuilding communities that are better prepared and more resilient in the face of future disasters,” said Harold Brooks, senior vice president, International Operations, American Red Cross. “Since Haiyan’s landfall, we have worked to ensure these communities have the right help at the right time, from relief supplies such as water cans to cash grants when markets reopened. In the months ahead we will help to provide shelter and job opportunities as people put their lives back together.”

To date, the American Red Cross has sent 46 disaster specialists who have assisted with emergency communication, mapping, information management, distribution of cash and relief supplies, as well as helping to plan for long-term recovery.

Since the typhoon, the American Red Cross has spent or committed $56.8 million to the relief and recovery efforts, which is about two-thirds of the $85.7 million donated for this disaster.

During the emergency response, donations were used to purchase and distribute relief items such as food, blankets, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, and shelter items. The money helped fund cash grants for 59,000 families affected by the typhoon. The Red Cross also has purchased forklifts, six-wheeled and 10-wheeled trucks to transport supplies, and safety equipment for use for Red Cross work in the Philippines. The American Red Cross expects to make additional financial commitments to the ongoing recovery effort.

The American Red Cross continues to work in partnership with Philippine Red Cross and other Red Cross societies to help affected communities with short-term recovery planning, paving the way for long-term reconstruction. The focus is on the most critical needs, including helping people rebuild homes with more storm-resistant materials and assisting people who lost jobs and livelihoods. On average, 91 cents of every dollar spent by the American Red Cross goes directly to humanitarian services and programs.
