Floods Expected in Dublin

Flood warnings have been issued in Dublin for the coming weekend. The flood risk is a result of high tides from around midday on Friday 31 January 2014. A further high tide is expected the next day.

According to Dublin City Council:

A series of very high tides is due to occur starting this Friday- January 31st, continuing over the weekend until Monday, February 3rd. Early indications are that the tides due at 11.30 am on Friday and at 12.18pm on Saturday will be particularly high. An accurate forecast of the high tide level for Friday should be available tomorrow morning.

The warning has prompted authorities to start building up flood defences, particularly around the Clontarf and Sandymount areas, and also in Ballsbridge. Some roads and possibly bridges are likely to be closed as a precaution. Dublin City Council say pumps are in place in Macken Street / Cardiff Lane and also Clontarf.

Of Dublin’s 3 main rivers (Liffey, Tolka and Dodder), it is thought that the Tolka and Dodder are most at risk of overflowing. Authorities are likely to raise flood gates along both rivers until the Saturday high tide has passed.

Dublin City Council asked people to exercise precaution.

We would ask that people please stay away from sea walls and not go close to them to take photographs. This is extremely dangerous and places an unnecessary and additional burden on the Emergency Services.
