NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training – Monitoring Tropical Storms for Emergency Preparedness

NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) will provide an online webinar series Monitoring Tropical Storms for Emergency Preparedness May 3-10, 2018. The series will train attendees how to access and apply NASA data and tools for monitoring tropical storms.

Increasing Coastal Preparedness Before, During, and After Tropical Storms

Tropical storms have major impacts, including loss of life and destruction of property. In 2017 alone, the United States experienced three tropical storms with more than $1 billion in losses. A storm’s intensity, path, wind, precipitation, storm surge, and flooding can be derived from historical and near real-time satellite observations. By the end of the training, attendees will be able to identify remote sensing data and tools relevant to tropical storms; monitor conditions before, during, and after a storm using remote sensing data; and understand how remote sensing data can be used in decision-making activities

This training, provided free of charge, is designed for international entities and coastal communities involved in emergency management, such as relief organizations, transportation and utility providers, public health professionals, insurance providers decision support activities, and various relief and humanitarian organizations.

There will be two, 2-hour training sessions, Thursdays, May 3 and 10. Each session will be broadcast twice, at different times on each training date to accommodate international participation.

“We aim to provide participants with the tools to monitor tropical storms throughout all phases of disaster management, from mitigation and preparedness to response and recovery,” says Brock Blevins, ARSET training coordinator. “The first session will focus on data needs, relevant remote sensing data and tools, and ways to use remote sensing to monitor pre-storm conditions. The second session will demonstrate the use of Earth observations to monitor events during a storm: winds, rain, flooding, storm surge, and ways communities can use remote sensing to supplement their emergency management operations.”

NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) is sponsored by the Applied Sciences Program within NASA’s Earth Sciences Division. The Applied Sciences Program supports applied research and targets projects focused on innovative and practical uses of data from Earth Observations satellites to inform decision makers around the globe. Since 2008, ARSET has worked with NASA Applied Sciences Program managers and principal investigators to communicate the datasets, tools, and portals that are operationally ready to present to weather forecasters, water resource managers, and disaster relief professionals.

The goal of the NASA Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) is to empower the global community through online and in-person remote sensing training. These trainings are meant to increase the use of NASA Earth science data and models in decision-making for policy makers, regulatory agencies, and other applied science professionals.
