500 Evacuated after floods in Kulim, Malaysia

Heavy rainfall on 20th October brought flash floods which inundated villages around Kulim, in Kedah state, Malaysia. Around 200 people had to be evacuated from their homes immediately yesterday. A further 300 have also since been evacuated today after rising water levels of rivers posed a further threat to residents’ safety. The displaced are currently taking shelter in temporary accommodation in 9 relief centres.

The heavy rainfall left levels of the Sungai Muda river dangerously high, and left Padang Meha and Merbau Pulas under flood water.

Kulim lies just a few kilometres from the southern border of Thailand. Forecasters have said that heavy rainfall can be expected in parts of southern Thailand later this week (most likely Wednesday 23rd October 2013), and have issued warning of flash floods and landslides.
