Cyclone Phailin brought heavy rainfall throughout a number of india’s north eastern states over the last few days. below is a summary of the current situation.
Odisha
Floods are reported as receding across the state, although Baliapal and Bhogarai in Balasore district were still suffering.
- 17 have died in floods. 21 died as a result of Cyclone Phailin
- Worst hit areas are Ganjam, Balasore and Mayurbhanj
- There have been reports of medicine shortages in affected flooded areas
- Also a rise in occurrences of snake bites reported
Despite the successful evacuations which so reduced the impact of the Phailin, many of those currently suffering in flooded areas of Odisha said officials had not warned them about the floods.

Bihar
- Seven people have died in floods in Bihar after storm Phailin
- 3 deaths occurred in Lalganj, 2 in Kaimur and 1 each in Madhepura and Khagaria
Between 14th and 16th October, Bihar suffered heavy rainfall:
- Bhagalpur 23.2 cm
- Patna recorded 12.7 cm
- Gaya 11.2 cm
- Purnia 20.3 cm
- Vaishali 8.8 cm
- Muzaffarpur 12.2 cm rain
The heavy rainfall is now easing in Bihar, as tropical depression moves away from the state and towards West Bengal.
West Bengal
- Heavy rainfall and floods resulting from Cyclone Phailin have affected West Bengal over the last 4 days
- East Midnapore worst affected area
- 9 have died in floods so far in West Bengal, 7 in East Midnapore
- 83,000 hectares of crops destroyed
- Army had to work to repair 75 metre stretch of river embankment in East Midnapore
