Malda Flood Defences Fail Again

On 16th July 2013 I wrote about the failure of flood defences in Malda, West Bengal. The collapsed river embankment, which broke on 14th July, was in the Gajol and Harishchandrapur areas of Malda district. Erosion had caused previous damage to existing embankments.

The flood defences in Malda have rencently been tested again and sadly failed to protect surrounding villages from flod waters. The swollen Ganga breached an embankment at Gopalpur area, leaving 15 villages under water and tens of thousands pf people affected. The river was 25cm above the danger level.
